The history of Saltash is very long and interesting. Several Saxon settlements existed in the rural areas west of Saltash more than 1000 years ago, notably the rural communities of Burraton and Trematon. Saltash grew as a port and the town’s strategic location meant it played a role in several important events. The town suffered massive destruction during the Civil War but was rebuilt and continued to maintain its significance. The Saltash Ferry played a key transport role until the beginning of the twentieth century.
